LOL: Riot's ESports Chief talks about the Worlds 2023 and the great disappointment of the community
The competitive season of League of Legends has ended after playing the final of the Worlds 2022. A confrontation between Dr and T1 that resulted in victory for the least favorites and that put an end to an event that will go down in history of the video game as one of the best according to the opinion of the community . However, not even that has been enough for complaints about the format. A situation motivated by the shortage of great games such as the ones we played in the qualifiers phase and of which Riot Games has taken note announcing changes for next year. However, not the most anticipated transformations.
The double elimination does not reach the Worlds 2023
In an interview conducted by Travis Afford that has longed everything he has interesting, the American journalist had the opportunity to chat with John Needham. The president of ESports of Riot Games answered issues among which was, of course, the situation of the World League of Legends championship and the possibility of introducing a double elimination format. Again, the company's representative denied the possibility of introducing the ‘loser bracket’ , although deepening a little more explanations and the need to make changes that improve the long-term competitive ecosystem.
We are always talking about formats for all our competitions, and we have spent the last year working on those of League of Legends (...) we believe that the World Cup must be the event with more at play of all we organize. We think that the emotion that on a given day a great team can be eliminated means something in the experience of sport. It's as simple as that, you don't think about it. We do not hate double elimination, I think it is a great structure for a tournament. However, what we think for something so great and important is that it must stay in the unique elimination format (the current one) for now, explained John Needham.
Ensuring that Valorant tournaments will stay as until now to reassure fans, the president of ESports by Riot Games also recognized mistakes about the World Cup format. There are a lot of matches that mean nothing in the current format and that is another part of the equation we are studying . Ideally, we want all League of Legends World Cup matches to mean something, and right now there are many who do not. From the rooms onwards it is an incredible tournament, but before that it is not optimal at all, he explained before finishing with the following phrase: It's not just about being the best team in the world, but also being on a specific day.
In addition to this topic, there were other interesting discussions throughout the interview. John Needham said that the ESports division of Riot Games is working on improving communication with the community , or the importance of ‘cos streaming’. On this last practice, which consists in allowing content creators to carry out the live broadcast of competitions simultaneously, ensures that the sensations have been very positive, as they had already been with Valorant. Go ahead that is far from confirming that it will become the standard, but ensures that it is very uploaded to the Coastal ship.
Of course, you can consult the full interview in the Travis Gifford YouTube channel . However, he has the paste that he was completely made in English and does not have subtitles in Spanish. In any case, if you understand the language, it is a piece of those that you cannot miss.
